Naturopathy (Naturismo)

Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is an alternative form of holistic medicine which emphasizes the body's natural ability to heal itself. It originated in Europe during the 19th century, and soon gained popularity in the United States. Naturopathic treatment aims to support the body's ability to heal itself through the implementation of dietary and lifestyle changes by means of natural and non-invasive treatment. Naturopaths prefer not to use surgery or synthetic drugs, and instead seek to help the patient through treatment such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, and others.

Naturopaths are taught to recognize and promote the self-healing power of all human beings, and to identify and treat the cause of a disease or condition rather than its symptoms. Taking a holistic approach, practitioners also try to teach patients the various ways of living that are most healthy and most likely to prevent illness. A first visit to a naturopathic practitioner includes an extended interview where the patient is questioned at length about his or her health history, reasons for the visit, and lifestyle characteristics (such as diet, stress, sleep, and exercise). Toward the end of the appointment, the practitioner will have established a management plan to address the patient's general health and problems with illness. This may include dietary changes, the intake of vitamins or minerals, or counseling. Practitioners may also consider it necessary to refer the patient to other health care providers.
