Medicinal plants or herbs have been in use for thousands of years for the purposes of restoring or maintaining health. They have been used in various practices and systems of healthcare, such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Folk Medicine, and Native American practices. Natural herbs are proven to be very effective in boosting the immune system, increasing the body’s resistance to infections, and treating allergies.
Medicinal herbs can be administered in a variety of ways, including:
Tinctures: These are alcoholic extracts of herbs.
Herbal wine: This is a maceration of herbs in wine.
Elixirs: They are a maceration of herbs in spirits.
Tisanes: Hot-water extracts of an herb.
Vinegars
Topicals: These may applied as essential oils, salves, balms, creams, and lotions. Many massage oils, antibacterial salves and wound healing compounds are made this way.
Poultices and compresses: These may be prepared using a whole herb or only the appropriate part. The herb is first crushed or dried and re-hydrated with a small amount of water, and then applied in a bandage or cloth or applied directly to the body.
Whole herb consumption. This may be in dried form such as the case with herbal powders, or fresh, in juices.
Syrups: These are extracts of herbs made with syrup or honey.
Inhalation: This method is particularly beneficial for treating sinus infections or cough and to cleanse the skin.
