Gestalt therapy, currently used in the fields of psychotherapy, organizational development, and coaching, is based on a holistic theory of mind and brain. One principle of the theory is that the conscious experience must be considered as a whole, i.e. all physical and mental aspects of the individual must be taken into account simultaneously, because the holistic mind requires each component to be considered within a system of dynamic relationships. The person is never reduced to parts and structural entities, but rather viewed as an integrated whole with innate potential for growth and mature self-expression.
This experiential method of psychotherapy focuses on the individual's experience in the present, the therapist-client relationship, the environmental and social contexts in which these things take place, and the self-regulating adjustments made by the client as a result, placing great emphasis on the client’s personal responsibility. The emphasis is on what is being done, thought, and felt at the moment rather than on what was, might, could, or should be.
The objective of Gestalt therapy is to help clients overcome symptoms and learn to become aware of what they are doing psychologically and how they can change it to achieve fulfillment and growth. The aim of the Gestalt therapist is to assist the client in restoring his or her own natural ability to self-regulate and have successful and fulfilling contact with others, as well as with unknown or unaccepted aspects of oneself. This allows the client to be able to cope with the events of his or her life and to take action in order to achieve individual goals. By being aware of and experimenting with sensations, emotional responses, desires, and cognitive assumptions, the clients’ range of choices about their relationships with the environment and others will be enhanced. Gestalt therapy is often applied because of its capacity to facilitate and nurture the full functioning of the individual and its potential to bring about human healing, growth, and wholeness.
