Eutony is a holistic form of body-centered psychotherapy created by Gerda Alexander based on the theory that there is a constant interaction between muscular tone and psychic activity. Eutony helps patients develop the ability to be aware of muscular tone, and regulate it as is necessary depending on the situation. This form of therapy uses the knowledge of one's own body to establish a positive use of its structures to properly perform daily activities. According to Eutony, when one possesses a good muscular tone, the body has flexibility and adaptability. On the other hand, when one has a hiper tone there is excessive tension; and when a hipo tone is experienced, one feels heavy and without the necessary energy. Through Eutony, it is possible to regulate breathing and circulation by adjusting one’s own muscular tone by gaining awareness of mind and being in contact with one’s surroundings.
Therapy may be in group or individual sessions where the eutonist first accompanies patients in recognizing and exploring their muscular tone through a series of control positions. Then the patients proceed to perform a series of physical activities guided by the eutonist and which may include the use of objects such as balls or sticks, or direct contact between the eutonist and the patient. Through these activities the patient is able to explore the body’s perceptions. The therapy is said to lead to a better understanding of one’s self, which leads to greater emotional capacities and harmony, both beneficial to health.
