Buddhism is both a religion and a philosophy. Originated in India, Buddhism aspires for a peaceful way of life in which kindness and wisdom may be attained. According to Buddha, all society’s problems arise from negative states of mind, and happiness and good fortune may arise from peaceful and positive states of mind. In order to overcome negative thoughts and achieve positive states of mind, there are a variety of methods that may be employed.
The teachings of Buddha help understand step by step the path that leads to everlasting happiness. To begin this path and the Buddhist way of life, meditation is considered necessary. According to Buddhists, meditation helps individuals understand their own mind, identify negative mental states, and learn how to develop virtuous minds and attain enlightenment.
In Buddhism, it is believed that the mind is a separate entity from the body, and does not cease upon death. Every action during a person’s life leaves an imprint on the mind. Virtuous actions lead to future happiness and non-virtuous actions lead to future suffering once the individual is reborn. The cycle of death and rebirth, known as samsara, is uninterrupted for as long as the individual continues his or her non-virtuous actions. By practicing the Buddhist path of moderation and altruistic behavior it is possible for individuals to liberate themselves from the cycle.
