Astrology (Astrologia)

Astrology, which connects the movements of the cosmos to activity on earth, is considered as a form of therapy which relies on the belief that knowledge of the apparent relative positions of celestial bodies and other details of relevance is of great use in understanding, interpreting, and organizing information about individuals. In other words, through the use of astrology many earthly matters such as personality can be analyzed and explained.

The origins of astrology date back to the ancient Babylonians and their system of celestial omens. It then began its development and use in the psychological area with Carl Jung’s studies during the 1950s.When studying the meaning of dreams, Jung noticed a relation in the images of dreams to the celestial figures of the astrologers. He began to believe that astrology could teach human beings about the human mind.

In astrological consultations, a natal chart is prepared, and the patient must provide the astrologer with the date, time (as accurate as possible) and place of birth. The chart is prepared based on this information, and the astrologer and patient discuss the findings. There are various astrological therapy styles. The two most common are counseling and psychotherapy. In counseling, the astrologer and the individual converse, but the astrologer does more of the talking and treatment consists of few if not one session where the astrologer makes the client aware of his or her particular problem areas. In therapy, on the other hand, the natal chart is used as a diagnosis tool to enhance therapy sessions. Therapy is more long-term and a genuine relationship is formed between the astrologer and the client. Whereas therapy aims to improve the individual’s personality structure, counseling helps the client deal more effectively with immediate problems without necessarily aspiring for internal change. In therapy, the astrologer helps in the therapeutic process by pointing out the individual’s strengths and weaknesses that appear to be hidden and are often not observed through a more traditional therapeutic approach.

Astrological consultations and therapy are directed at individuals, couples, and families. Astrologers guide the client towards personal growth, supporting and motivating the client to take a more active role in spiritual growth and healing. The natal chart provides a clear view of the person's personality, developmental timetable, and way of experiencing the world. As such, it can help the individual gain insight into the self and help in making important decisions and coping with a crisis. Astrology can thus be used when trying to resolve problems related to grief, transition, work, and relationships.
