Archery is used worldwide by therapists working with people with disabilities due to illness or injury. Recreational therapists introduce their patients to archery in order to increase the patients’ strength and endurance, sharpen cognitive skills, and improve their lifestyle so as to restore health to an optimum level. In wheelchair archery, handicapped individuals are also able to improve their upper limb and grip strength as well as their balance in the chair.
Archery involves drawing a bow to shoot arrows at a particular target. The idea of aiming at a target seems to be helpful particularly in relaxing individuals by relieving stressful thoughts and grief. In order to properly shoot, it is necessary to stay focus and cool under pressure, ideas which, when applied to other areas of daily life, help reduce stress and boost the ability to concentrate.
