Alquemy (Alquimia)

Alchemy is an ancient discipline which combines elements of other disciplines such as chemistry, medicine, mysticism and spiritualism. Among other things, alchemists of old hoped to transform base metals into gold, and through this transformation also create a universal remedy that would cure all diseases and prolong life. The transformation of common metals into this universal remedy would result in the evolution from an imperfect, diseased state towards a perfect, healthy state.

For thousands of years, alchemy has served as a path for spiritual purification and transformation. It has also helped develop insight and intuition through images, helping to alter consciousness. On a spiritual level, alchemy serves to purify the body by eliminating the crude aspects of the self so that enlightenment may be achieved. Early alchemists valued the importance of their dreams and visions to perfect their art. To protect their secrets, they used mysterious symbols rather than text when recording their findings. These symbols continue to be essential when changing the states of consciousness.

First performed in Egypt and the Arab world, alchemy finally spread to the Western World during medieval and Renaissance times. In contemporary times, certain principles of alchemy are employed in various therapies, such as Ayurveda, where samskaras are used to transform heavy metals and toxic herbs in such a way that their toxicity is removed. In Chinese medicine, alchemical processes are used to alter the properties of medicines by roasting, frying with various ingredients, calcinating, and other means. The element used for frying will be chosen depending on which part of the body needs treatment. These techniques are now also applied in Western herbal medicine.

Many current therapies also employ alchemy to help individuals achieve wellbeing through physical health, emotional balance, and harmony. From a therapeutic and spiritual perspective, alchemy is a process through which individuals may explore their innermost spaces to ultimately achieve the desired transformation. Just as the alchemist was able to transform base metal into gold, so the individual can transform pain, trauma and all negative aspects of life (base metal) into a more realized self (gold).
