Acupressure (Digitopuntura)

Acupressure is a Chinese medicine technique sharing much the same theory as acupuncture. This ancient healing art uses the fingers, hands, elbows, and various other devices to skillfully press key points, which stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. When these trigger points are pressed, they release muscular tension, promote circulation of blood, and stimulate the body's energy to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same pressure points and meridians, but acupuncture employs needles, whereas acupressure uses different degrees of pressure and integrates bodywork therapies, therapeutic touch, and massage therapy techniques.

Many martial arts techniques also use acupressure for self-defense to manipulate or incapacitate opponents, and for health purposes, to remove blockages from the body’s meridians and enhance flexibility.

As a form of Chinese medicine, acupressure is based on the theory that the flow of energy in the body governs blood circulation and health, and an imbalance in the flow results in an unhealthy state. In acupressure, by giving a certain degree of pressure with thumb, fingers, or any other device on a specific healing acupressure point, the internal organs are stimulated and normal energy flow is restored to different parts of the body, which in turn restores health.

In fire cupping, acupressure is applied by using glass, plastic, or bamboo cups on the skin to create a vacuum. The therapy is used to relieve respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Cupping is also used to treat back, neck, and shoulder pain. Acupressure techniques help restore balance in the body, and maintain good health. Acupressure's healing touch also reduces tension and stress. By relieving stress, acupressure therapy strengthens resistance to disease and promotes wellness.
