More and more patients are choosing alternative techniques over traditional Western methods, whether it be to treat a particular disease or to maintain a certain level of health. However, selecting the right alternative treatment is not as simple as grabbing a natural product off the shelf. We are all unique individuals, with particular needs, and certain steps must be taken in order to ensure that we take a well-informed, safe route to find the treatment that fits those needs. If, like many, you decide to consider an alternative course of treatment, you should remember to do the following:

Research. Ask yourself what the best treatments available are and consult your healthcare provider about them. Check out books and reliable internet resources.

Consider the principles a particular treatment is based on. Some treatments may require you or your family to make serious lifestyle changes that you may not yet be prepared to make.

Check if the particular treatment is covered by your health insurance. Although the cost of most alternative treatments is usually lower than conventional therapies, your insurance plan might not contemplate certain treatments.

Choose a trustworthy, qualified alternative healthcare provider. Make sure your treatment is monitored by someone who possesses the necessary certification and who is able to answer your questions. Watch out for individuals who say they can completely “cure” you but are not able or refuse to answer your questions regarding treatment. Alternative practitioners should always take a complete medical history, explain any risks involved, and be willing to communicate with your doctor regarding your treatment. Find referrals through various sources, such as friends, local health-food sores, support groups, and alternative health care schools and colleges. Above all, make sure you feel comfortable with the person you choose.

Consult your healthcare provider. Above all, keep your doctor in the loop. Some alternative treatments, especially those involving the intake of herbs, may interact with common medications or aggravate pre-existing health problems. Therefore, you should tell your doctor that you plan to try an alternative method, so that he or she is aware of your activities and can better advise you.

Once you’ve chosen the treatment you feel most comfortable with and have taken the necessary precautions, be consistent. It is important to follow the instructions given by the practitioner and take any actions recommended in order to assess whether or not treatment is working. Be alert and listen to your body, as it will be the first to notice any positive and negative changes which you might need to communicate.

It is extremely important to consult your healthcare provider regarding any course of treatment and/or medication.
